OVERLOOK is a collection of landscapes that are, in some cases, the literal views from scenic overlooks. Some are the views we might overlook, or dismiss, while focusing on the destination. Last summer my family was hiking to Lost Lake in Buena Vista, Colorado when it started to rain, and then hail. When we arrived at the lake the clouds still loomed. The lake was gray and the landscape was dark, but I could see that it was clearing. Although we were grumpy with one another and could have turned back having reached our target, I didn’t want to leave until I was rewarded with a beautiful mountain lake glowing in the sunlight. However, at the end of the trip, I was surprised to find that the gray and moody scene made for my favorite photos. I missed what was beautiful by focusing on what I thought would be better.
The painting “What Else” (2023) is based on a photo shared by a Park Ranger at Wind Cave National Park. She notes that many visitors come to see the cave and nothing else. So often we overlook what is special, lovely, small or wonderful because we are focused on what we think is going to be the best part. My landscape paintings are an invitation to you to share in the noticing of the light, atmosphere, and affect of these spaces. Some you might recognize because you’ve been there. Some you might have been there, but you missed it.
